Free Pattern: Quick & Easy Crochet Christmas Bauble

Free Pattern: Quick & Easy Crochet Christmas Bauble

Add a charming, handcrafted touch to your festive tree this holiday season! This Easy Crochet Christmas Bauble is a wonderfully quick, beginner-friendly project that’s perfect for whipping up in an evening.

Made using only chains, half double crochet (half treble crochet), and slip stitches, this pattern is about as simple as it gets! The clever stitch combination creates a beautiful ribbed texture with vibrant festive stripes in red, white, and green. It’s a fabulous stash-buster and ideal for crocheters of all skill levels.

Why You’ll Love This Project

  • Super Simple Stitches: If you can work a chain, a half double crochet (half treble crochet), and a slip stitch, you can make this bauble!
  • Quick to Hook Up: Perfect for a relaxing craft evening or last-minute holiday decorating.
  • Great Stash-Buster: Use up leftover scraps of red, green, white, or metallic yarn from your stash.
  • Customisable: Easy to tweak with your favourite colour combinations to match your festive theme.

Pattern Details & Materials

  • Skill Level: Easy / Beginner
  • Stitches Used Terms: Chain (ch), Half Double Crochet (hdc) {Half Treble Crochet UK htr}, Slip Stitch (sl st)
  • Yarn: Small amounts of DK or Worsted weight yarn in Red, Green, and White (or any colours you like). In the photos and pattern below, Jolly & Joy from Spotlight in Red, Green and White.
  • Hook: Sized appropriately for your chosen yarn (4.5mm used here).
  • Baubles: 8cm ones used (From Kmart $4 for a packet of 8)

Notes

  • Changing colours is done in the final yarn over and pull-through of the last hdc (htr) stitch – see photos below.
  • To save cutting yarn and having ends galore to weave in, we will keep the yarn attached when changing colours – see photos below.
  • This pattern is designed to fit 8cm baubles. If you need it to fit a different size, work a chain length and see if it fits from the top of the bauble to the bottom. Remove a couple of stitches from your chain length, as acrylic yarn will stretch when you fit the piece over the bauble.
  • Tip: In the photo below, I chained 16, slipped the loop off the hook, and popped it over the top of the bauble. Letting it loosely rest down the side without pulling, check if it reaches the bottom of the bauble nicely. Adjust your chain length accordingly if it doesn't fit.

Pattern: US TERMS

Foundation Row: Using Colour 1 – with a long tail (approx 20cm), place sl knot on hook. With sl knot on hook, chain 16 (15 ch + 1 turning ch). <16 ch>

Row 1: This row is worked into the back bumps of the chain sts. Make hdc in 2nd back bump from hook and each back bump along, ch 2 (does not count as st here and throughout). Turn work. <15 hdc>

Row 2: Blo hdc in first st (the last st of previous row) and in each st along (15). The last one will look a little tricky, as it likes to look like part of the ch sts; this is also the stitch you will change colours on. Ch 2, turn work. <15 blo hdc>

Row 3: Using New Colour, blo hdc in first st (the last st of previous row) and in each st along (15), ch 2, turn work. <15 blo hdc>

Row 4: Blo hdc in first st (the last st of previous row) and in each st along (15). The last one will look a little tricky, as it likes to look like part of the ch sts; this is also the stitch you will change colours on. Ch 2, turn work. <15 blo hdc>

Rows 5–18: Repeat Rows 3 and 4 till end of Row 18, ensuring you change colours at end of Row 4 instructions. <15 blo hdc per row>

Joining the sides:

1. Fold the bauble piece in half, ch 1, then insert hook into the front loop of Row 18 and into the bottom of the first st made in the Foundation Row. Make a sl st, then sl st into remaining stitches along both sides. <15 sl st>
2. Ch 1, then slip stitch (not too tightly) back to the other end, so that you have a long tail at both ends to attach it to the bauble.
3. Flip it inside out so the right side is now facing out. Insert sleeve over bauble.
4. Thread yarn tail onto tapestry needle and pass the needle through each top stitch around (see photos). Once you reach the start, pull tail tightly to gather. Work around a few times, till you feel it's securely, pulling the end tightly as you go. Weave around to secure the tail.
5. Repeat Step 4 for the bottom of the bauble.

Ta-da! Now you've finished. This is a quick and easy project—a great stash buster and gift idea.

I hope you enjoy making them <3
